But, detecting counterfeit drugs is not simple because they are often carefully packaged, mimicking real drugs from packaging to name.

According to the investigation by the Vietnamese police, the counterfeit drug production group has been operating for a long time, organizing production at various locations in Vietnam. They use social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube to advertise “hand-carried” drugs, “discounted stock drugs,” targeting the consumers’ psychology of being cheap and gullible, especially the elderly.

Once trust has been established, the individuals begin to deliver fake drugs.Notably, many types of drugs are also labeled with the names of companies and production addresses from abroad, making it easy for buyers to be deceived. Some types of drugs are even mixed with real and fake drugs to make it difficult for users to detect.

A representative from the Drug Administration Department under the Ministry of Health of Vietnam advises the public not to buy prescription drugs through social media or e-commerce platforms. According to experts, counterfeit drugs not only cause physical harm but also inflict mental and financial damage on patients, especially those undergoing treatment for chronic or serious diseases.

What can be done to protect oneself against the counterfeit drug epidemic?
To prevent the issue of counterfeit drugs, a coordinated effort is needed from regulatory agencies, the healthcare sector, and the public.

Some solutions proposed by experts include:

Một đường dây sản xuất và buôn bán thuốc giả với quy mô lớn vừa bị lực lượng công an tỉnh Thanh Hóa, Việt Nam triệt phá. Vụ việc một lần nữa gióng lên hồi chuông cảnh báo về tình trạng thuốc giả đang ngày càng phổ biến và gây hậu quả nghiêm trọng đối với sức khỏe cộng đồng.

Các loại thuốc được quảng bá là có tác dụng chữa khỏi bệnh nhưng thực chất chỉ là những viên nén giả, không chứa hoạt chất hoặc chứa các chất độc hại như corticoid. Nhiều bệnh nhân sau một thời gian sử dụng không những bệnh không thuyên giảm mà còn phát sinh thêm các biến chứng như suy gan, suy thận, rối loạn nội tiết.

Dùng thuốc giả không chỉ khiến người bệnh mất đi cơ hội điều trị mà còn làm kéo dài thời gian chữa bệnh, tăng nguy cơ tàn tật và tử vong. Một bác sĩ từ Trung tâm Oxy cao áp Việt – Nga cho biết. Nhưng, theo ông, việc phát hiện thuốc giả không đơn giản vì chúng thường được đóng gói cẩn thận, bắt chước thuốc thật từ bao bì đến tên gọi.

Theo điều tra của công an Việt Nam, nhóm sản xuất thuốc giả đã hoạt động trong thời gian dài, tổ chức sản xuất tại nhiều địa điểm khác nhau ở Việt Nam. Chúng sử dụng các nền tảng mạng xã hội như Facebook, Youtube để quảng cáo thuốc “xách tay”, “thuốc tồn kho giá rẻ”, đánh trúng vào tâm lý ham rẻ và cả tin của người tiêu dùng, đặc biệt là người cao tuổi.

Khi đã tạo được lòng tin, các đối tượng bắt đầu giao thuốc giả. Đáng chú ý, nhiều loại thuốc còn được in nhãn mác mang tên công ty và địa chỉ sản xuất từ nước ngoài, khiến người mua dễ dàng bị đánh lừa. Một số loại thuốc còn được trộn lẫn thuốc thật và thuốc giả để làm người dùng khó phát hiện.

Đại diện Cục Quản lý Dược thuộc Bộ Y tế Việt Nam khuyến cáo người dân tuyệt đối không mua thuốc kê đơn qua mạng xã hội hay các sàn thương mại điện tử. Thuốc kê đơn cần được bán tại các nhà thuốc có giấy phép, có dược sĩ tư vấn và quản lý chặt chẽ.
Người tiêu dùng không nên mua thuốc từ những người không rõ lai lịch, những nơi không có bảng hiệu, hoặc từ các nguồn quảng cáo qua livestream, hội nhóm trực tuyến. Giá thuốc quá rẻ cũng là dấu hiệu cần cảnh giác.

Một số loại thuốc giả hiện nay có hình thức rất tinh vi, khiến người tiêu dùng khó phân biệt nếu chỉ nhìn bằng mắt thường. Vì vậy, người dân cần nâng cao cảnh giác và luôn kiểm tra thông tin về sản phẩm trước khi sử dụng.

Sử dụng thuốc giả có thể khiến người bệnh không nhận được hiệu quả điều trị mong muốn. Thậm chí, việc dùng thuốc kháng sinh giả còn làm gia tăng tình trạng kháng thuốc, khiến những căn bệnh thông thường trở nên khó điều trị hơn, dẫn đến gánh nặng lớn cho hệ thống y tế.
Ngoài ra, nhiều bệnh nhân do không biết mình đang sử dụng thuốc giả nên khi bệnh trở nặng mới đến bệnh viện thì đã qua thời điểm điều trị hiệu quả, dẫn đến biến chứng nặng hoặc tử vong.

Theo các chuyên gia, thuốc giả không chỉ gây tổn hại về thể chất mà còn gây thiệt hại về tinh thần và tài chính cho người bệnh, đặc biệt là những người đang điều trị bệnh mạn tính hoặc bệnh hiểm nghèo.

Làm gì để tự bảo vệ trước vấn nạn thuốc giả

Để ngăn chặn tình trạng thuốc giả, cần có sự vào cuộc đồng bộ từ các cơ quan chức năng, ngành y tế và người dân. Một số giải pháp được các chuyên gia đề xuất bao gồm:
